Decorating Your Home

Q: I saw a sofa that I really liked in a home decorating magazine the other day. How can I find out who makes it and where to buy it?
A: Sometimes magazines will offer readers an advertising index in the back of the magazine or a reader's resource listing, if the furniture was included in a photo accompanying an article. If neither of those help you, try taking the magazine into your local furniture store and a sales representative should be able to help you. You should also try the Furniture Finder featured on this site – it can help you find the piece you're looking for.
Q: We are in the process of redecorating our house, and we are getting rid of a lot of old, but usable furniture in good condition. Do you have any ideas as to what we can do with it?
A: Many local charities might be willing to accept your furniture, like a halfway house, a children's cancer treatment dormitory for parents or a shelter for abused women. Your place of worship or local YMCA also might want it for their recreation area.

Q: I want to keep my house looking stylish and fresh, but I can't afford to redecorate every year. What are less expensive things that I can do to keep my furniture up-to-date?
A: Accessories, like picture frames, vases, decorative boxes, and lamps, are a wonderful way to update without having to completely start over. Another way to update, is to just buy one new piece of furniture at a time.
Q: I like the look and feel of leather, but I'm afraid I can't afford it. Are there any furniture manufacturers who make less expensive leather upholstery?
A: Leather is available at virtually all price points today. And leather has some wonderful, practical qualities – it is easy to care for, cool in the summer, warm in the winter and is friendly to kids and pets – crumbs and dog hair are simple to remove.
